How?
Since the rapid shrinking of the Arctic Ice Cap it is clear the scientists are unwilling or unable to predict major damaging events to any degree of accuracy. The earth is moving into uncharted waters and its peoples are likely to be reacting, or failing to react , to events after they have happened. If climate models did not predict the loss of such an enormous volume of ice they are not adequate to keep us safe from bigger disasters.
A new approach is needed in which the situation is treated as an emergency, similar to a world war, and urgent steps are taken to restore the atmosphere and the oceans to their former condition. The steps needed to achieve this are suggested in Climate Code Red by David Spratt and Philip Sutton but are more drastic than any now being considered by politicians.
They will include almost total reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and some artificial cooling because the former will not act quickly enough. For a time the standard of living may return to the 1950's levels.
Most importantly the speed of research and of action must be escalated to wartime urgency and commitment.
